College Paper Formats: General Guidelines for Students

college paper formats article

Defining college paper formats, it can be stated that the formats merely represent a list of requirements that colleges request from their students. College paper formats are expected to be followed in order for the papers to be accepted.

In that regard, although college paper formats might differ between different colleges as well as between individual instructors, there are common guidelines, which are applicable to most college assignments. Additionally, there are slight variations between college paper formats in different styles, e.g. APA, MLA, etc. This article will present the general guidelines for college paper formats.

Guidelines on College Paper Formats

The guidelines on college paper formats usually contain the following elements:

  • The papers are typed on standard white A4 paper format, i.e. 8.5x11 inches.
  • The paper should have one inch margin from all sides. Some exceptions can be seen in giving a larger margin on the sides, although such margins are not common.
  • In terms of fonts, college paper format implies using standard 12 pt. font. The term standard refers to any font used for academic purposes, e.g. Arial, Times New Roman, and others.
  • Papers are double spaced throughout the whole text, with no additional spacing between paragraphs.
  • College paper format implies that the text should be aligned to the left, with each paragraph indented half an inch. It should be stated that in some citation styles the indentation requirements might vary, e.g. MLA and Harvard.

Additional requirements might include the usage of sub-headings in the paper and the format of citations. In the first case, the main rule is to increase the organization of the paper, without overuse, while in the second case, it depends on the chosen reference style.
