Essay Titles: Simple Guidelines and Instructions for Students
Coming up with an essay title is one of the most frustrating processes in writing an assignment. The latter is specifically difficult in cases in which the topic of the essay is not pre-determined by your instructor. One might say that the coming up with essay titles is as easy as repeating the key terms of the topic, e.g. the topic is the Cold War so is the title.
The latter is one of the most common mistakes in writing essay titles, and thus, a clarification might be required. This article will attempt to explain the aspects that should be considered when composing an essay title.
Guidelines
- There are several points that should be considered when coming with an essay title, several of which can be seen in the following guidelines:
- Essay titles should correspond to the content of the paper, and thus, should not contain any elements that are not covered in the essay.
- Essay titles should not merely repeat the theme of the essay or its thesis. Being creative is an essential element in that regard.
- Essay titles should be original. In that sense, the originality implies plagiarism-free titles, not only in the words arrangement, but also in the structure and the ideas of the essay.
- Essay titles should not be general. If the essay covers a single aspect of a theme, then, the title should indicate such aspect, rather than generalize it, e.g. the essay is on teen pregnancy in the United States, while the title states just Teen Pregnancy.
Finally, it can be stated that the most important aspect in composing the title is to attract readers and to make them want to proceed with reading.
